The city was founded in the 7th Century by the Phoenicians. They named both the town and the island after the god Bes Ebusim. From the Phoenicians there is still a large necropolis west of the Old Town (Dalt Vila), the Puig des Molins (eng. Mill Hill), which later was also used by the Romans.
